Monument Rocks
You would be amazed at the number of people who drive out to see Monument Rocks. Almost without exception, they are truly impressed. Only on the plains of Western Kansas can you appreciate the sheer size of these massive rock columns that tower up to 100 feet into the air. Early travelers on the Smoky Hill trail considered them an important landmark. If you have never been to Monument Rocks (or the Kansas Pyramids as most locals call them), they are easy to find. From I-70 take exit 70 or 76 to US 83 and go south from Oakley about 20 miles. From the South, catch US 83 and go north of Scott City about the same distance. Either way you will see a billboard that directs you to turn east. You will drive on country roads that are fine unless its raining hard. Also be prepared to drive over cattle guards - metal pipe bridge-type crossings that let vehicles across but not the cows!!!
